6. NIH - Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award

The participating institutes and centers of the National Institutes for Health (NIH) invite applications for the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08). This award supports the development of outstanding clinician research scientists by providing three, four, or five years of supervised research in laboratory or field-based research.

The proposed research must have intrinsic research importance as well as serving as a suitable vehicle for learning the methodology, theories, and conceptualizations necessary for a well-trained, independent researcher. The didactic and research components of both phases must develop new knowledge and research skills in scientific areas relevant to the career goals of the candidate. All programs must be tailored to meet the individual needs of the candidate ensuring that he/she will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out high quality patient-oriented research. Therefore, the candidate and the mentor are jointly responsible for the preparation of the plan for this program. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the staff person in the relevant institution or center early in the planning phase of the application preparation.

Eligible candidates must have a clinical doctoral degree or its equivalent, must be able to identify a mentor with extensive research experience, and must be willing to spend a minimum of 75 percent of full-time professional effort conducting research and research career development. Some of the participating NIH institutes and centers require completion of postgraduate clinical training by the time of award. Candidates must be United States citizens, non-citizen nationals, or legal permanent residents. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.

The award provides up to five consecutive 12-month awards. The NIH will provide salary and fringe benefits which are based on a full-time 12-month staff appointment.

Applications are due at the NIH Center for Scientific Review on or before FEBRUARY 1, JUNE 1, or OCTOBER 1, 2000.
