8. NIH/FIC- HIV-AIDS and Related Illness Collaboration Award

The Fogarty International Center (FIC) invites applications for its enhanced HIV-AIDS and Related Illnesses Research Collaboration Award (AIDS-FIRCA) which provides small individual research grants for collaboration between United States and foreign scientists. Support is available for research on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and for research related to AIDS. The United States scientist will apply as principal investigator with a colleague from a single laboratory or research site in an eligible country.

All areas of research directly and indirectly related to HIV infection and AIDS are eligible for consideration. Examples of some topics include research on and studies about the following:

  • development of HIV/AIDS vaccines;
  • antiviral and other interventions for HIV/AIDS;
  • HIV and infection by the virus;
  • other retroviruses related to HIV;
  • maternal/pediatric HIV infections;
  • cofactors involved in HIV infection;
  • spread of HIV infection and AIDS into new locales;
  • natural history of HIV infection;
  • opportunistic infections and other disorders that result from immunosuppression by the AIDS virus;
  • emerging/reemerging microbes and diseases linked to factors known or suspected to related to the spread of HIV;
  • social and behavioral factors that affect HIV risk and transmission.

The following requirements must be met to be eligible for an AIDS-FIRCA grant:

  • U.S. applicants must be principal investigators or project directors on NIH research grants that will be active and funded at the start of the proposed FIRCA budget period;
  • proposed AIDS-FIRCA research should, in general, be an extension or a new direction of the parent grant;
  • foreign collaborators must hold a position at a public or private not-for-profit institution that will allow adequate time and provide appropriate facilities to conduct the proposed research;
  • only an AIDS-FIRCA application may be submitted by the same investigator per review cycle;
  • applicants may apply for only one competitive renewal of a given AIDS-FIRCA award, providing the above-mentioned criteria are satisfied at the time of application for the renewal.

The mechanism of support will be the NIH small grant (R03), which provides $32,000 in direct costs per year for a period of one to three years. Travel funds may be requested up to 20 percent of the total direct costs (up to $6,4000) for the U.S. principal investigator, the foreign collaborator, and/or their colleagues or students, for visits to each other's laboratory or research site. The research under the FIRCA award is expected to occur mainly at the foreign site and the major portion of the funds should be spent at the foreign site to support this research.

Applications are due at the FIC on or before JANUARY 2, MAY 1, or SEPTEMBER 1, 2000.
