38. NEA - New Public Works Program

As part of its efforts to invest in projects that promote and use design to make communities across the nation more livable, the National Endowment for the Arts will make a limited number of grants for design competitions to stimulate excellence in design in the public realm. This initiative will be a pilot program with a different emphasis each year. In the first year, the Endowment will fund competitions that focus on various aspects of design within the design disciplines, including:

  • Planning
  • Architecture and interior design
  • Landscape architecture
  • Industrial design
  • Graphic design

Projects may include, but are not limited to, competitions for masterplans; public building design; or landscape design, reclamation, or restoration. Subsequent years will be dedicated to specific types of work, such as parks and landscape, housing, or civic structures. Competitions may be run through open or limited calls for entries.

Collaborative partnership projects are encouraged. However, each partnership must have a lead organization that submits the application, assumes full responsibility for the grant, and sponsors the other partners. No more than ten grants of up to $50,000 each will be awarded. Each grant will require a match of at least 1 to 1. In-kind contributions will qualify as a portion of the match. Grants are subject to the Arts Endowment's annual Congressional appropriations and the funds that are available.

All organizations that are interested in applying must submit a letter of intent by JANUARY 18, 2000. A limited number of organizations will be invited, by February 15, 2000, to submit formal applications. Formal applications must be postmarked no later than APRIL 17, 2000.
