42. The AOL Foundation - Interactive Education Initiative

The AOL Foundation's Interactive Education Initiative (IEI) is a grant program that provides teams of educators and others with seed money to develop and implement innovative, hands-on projects that improve student performance through the integration of interactive technology into the learning environment. America Online (AOL) believes the online medium has tremendous potential as an educational tool to advance student learning. Accordingly, a key goal of the recently launched AOL Foundation is to serve as a catalyst in the development of innovative applications of interactive technology that will enhance student learning.

Major educational goals of the AOL Foundation are to:

Help economically and culturally disadvantaged children and others develop the skills needed to succeed in the workplace of tomorrow, and lead productive and fulfilling lives.
Encourage experimentation with innovative uses of interactive technology in K-12 education, with the goal of advancing student learning.

In line with these goals, the AOL Foundation's Interactive Education Initiative offers grants of up to $7,500 to teams of teachers, administrators, parents, and/or community leaders throughout the United States to develop and implement innovative uses of interactive technology to enhance educational outcomes for K-12 students.

Primary objectives of the Interactive Education Initiative are to:

Support teachers, parents, and others with creative ideas for using interactive technology more effectively to enhance student achievement.
Create and spread collaborative models for using interactive technology to advance teaching and learning.
Develop and nurture a national network of committed educators, parents, and others dedicated to the development of effective uses of interactive technology in education.

All applications must be postmarked by Monday, JANUARY 17, 2000.
